Natural hydrogen:

Natural hydrogen — H₂ gas produced spontaneously in the Earth's crust — is moving from scientific curiosity to global industrial priority. In 2026 alone: record concentrations in Lorraine, the European Commission funded the first pan-EU mapping contract, and private investment crossed $500M. The race has begun.

What is it?

Natural hydrogen:
a short primer

Natural hydrogen is H₂ gas produced by geochemical reactions in the Earth's crust — principally serpentinisation (iron-rich rocks reacting with groundwater at depth) and radiolysis (radioactive decay splitting water molecules). These processes have been running continuously for hundreds of millions of years.

Unlike fossil hydrocarbons, natural hydrogen is not finite — it does not deplete. Unlike green hydrogen, it requires no electricity input to produce. This is why FDE's €0.50/kg production target — roughly one-tenth of today's green hydrogen cost — is considered plausible by the scientific community.

The terminology varies: white hydrogen (no carbon), geological hydrogen, native hydrogen (mineralogical term), gold hydrogen (commercial branding). This portal uses "natural hydrogen" — the most widely adopted term in scientific and policy literature.

Three formation mechanisms
🪨
Mechanism 1 · Primary
Serpentinisation
Iron-rich rocks (peridotite, dunite) react with groundwater at 200–400°C at depth. Iron oxidises to magnetite, releasing H₂ continuously. Main mechanism in Lorraine and the Belgian Hercynian basement.
Lorraine · Belgium · Alpine ophiolites
☢️
Mechanism 2 · Complementary
Radiolysis
Natural radioactivity in deep granites splits groundwater molecules, releasing H₂. Confirmed in the Canadian Shield (University of Toronto, PNAS, May 2026) and South African deep mines.

Mechanism 3 · Localised
Deep degassing
Primordial H₂ escapes from the Earth's mantle through deep fault zones. Bulqizë mine (Albania): 200 t/yr at 84% purity — the largest natural H₂ flux ever quantified (Truche et al., Science, 2024).

Why 2026 is the inflection point

Five reasons natural hydrogen
moved from fringe to mainstream

🪨
PTH-2 — geological proof at unprecedented depth
49.6% H₂ at 2,426m in the world's deepest dedicated natural H₂ well (3,655m). Subsurface confirmation — not just surface measurements.
🇪🇺
EU institutional recognition
July 2026 EC contract to map all 27 member states signals that the EU treats natural hydrogen as a credible resource requiring industrial governance.
💰
Private capital crossing $500M
Koloma ($245M), Gold Hydrogen (ASX), FDE and exploration companies globally. Breakthrough Energy and Bezos Earth Fund investing — institutional capital follows.
📚
Science in top journals
Truche et al. (Science, 2024) and University of Toronto (PNAS, 2026) established geological credibility beyond dispute.
Green hydrogen cost plateau
At €3–6/kg, green H₂ has not hit its 2020 targets. Natural H₂ at €0.50/kg bypasses the entire electrolysis cost structure.
🤖
AI-accelerated geological mapping
Getech's AI can screen continents for natural H₂ prospectivity in months rather than decades. The search space is suddenly tractable.
The e-fuels connection

Natural hydrogen at €0.50/kg:
what it changes for synthetic fuels

E-fuel costs with natural H₂ at €0.50/kg vs today — indicative estimates
  • E-petrol — today ~€3.40/L → ~€1.60/L · near fossil parity · EU 2035 combustion engine exemption viable without subsidy
  • E-kerosene (SAF) — today ~€2.50–3.50/L → ~€1.20/L · ReFuelEU PtL mandate viable without penalty support · aviation decarbonisation unlocked
  • E-methanol (maritime) — today ~€920/t → ~€280/t · approaches fossil methanol parity · FuelEU Maritime without green premium
  • E-ammonia — today ~€800/t → ~€250/t · competitive with grey ammonia without carbon pricing
  • E-diesel — today ~€1.65/L → ~€0.85/L · near fossil diesel parity · heavy industry, mining, defence without mandate pressure

Indicative estimates only · FDE €0.50/kg is a declared production target not a confirmed commercial price · consult official sources

The geological data on Getech's proprietary databases will be of increasing importance to governments, energy companies and regulators around the world as hydrogen cements its place as a pillar of the global energy transition.
